As part of our mission to generate a positive impact on the graphic design community, we always welcome the opportunity to share what we do and what we’ve learned with other designers. Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona recently provided us with an opportunity to present a lecture to students, and to instruct a design workshop.

We created a poster for our lecture, and we were delighted to see the students had also created a variety of stellar posters for the lecture series. (We believe this is the first time our faces have been illustrated.)

We went presented over 230 (mostly silly) slides in about an hour explaining who we are, where we came from, what we do, and why we do things the way we do them.

The reaction was really positive and it has us fired up to give more lectures in the future, building on and improving subsequent lectures.

In addition to the lecture we hosted a quick design workshop. We gave a quick presentation on how to establish a proper hierarchy of importance within the various traits and elements of a poster (from catching the eye to delivering information). We then provided them with a variety of text content for somewhat imaginary events and walked them through a lightning speed version of our typical process. In less than 2 hours they went from simple word lists, to concepts, to sketches, and finally to design execution. The workshop contained students from all levels of experience, but every single one of them impressed us in one way or another with what they accomplished in such a short amount of time.
